Joy Stephenson-Laws

Managing Partner

Biography

Joy Stephenson-Laws is the founding and managing partner of Stephenson, Acquisto & Colman (SAC), widely regarded as the healthcare industry’s premier litigation firm. In her role, Ms. Stephenson-Laws leads a multidisciplinary team of more than 100 professionals — attorneys, physicians, nurses, healthcare operations specialists, and technology experts — whose integrated approach has redefined how complex healthcare litigation is managed and resolved. Under her leadership, SAC has recovered more than $1 billion on behalf of its clients, including leading institutions such as Stanford Medical Center, UCLA Medical Center, and UC Irvine Medical Center, while consistently earning exceptional client satisfaction ratings.

Central to SAC’s success is Ms. Stephenson-Laws’ commitment to innovation and efficiency in legal services. The firm is widely recognized for pioneering SACLINK, its proprietary, interactive, paperless document management system, which enhances transparency, collaboration, and responsiveness for clients navigating highly regulated healthcare matters. This forward-thinking approach reflects her conviction that excellence in healthcare litigation requires not only legal acumen but also operational expertise and technological sophistication. Ms. Stephenson-Laws has devoted her entire legal career to public benefit issues, with a particular emphasis on healthcare advocacy and reform. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from Loma Linda University and her Juris Doctor from Loyola University. Before founding her firm in 1989, which was later joined by partners Vince Acquisto and George Colman, she served as a staff attorney with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and as a supervising attorney at Inland Counties Legal Services, where she focused extensively on healthcare litigation. These formative roles shaped her enduring commitment to protecting both healthcare providers and the communities they serve.

Ms. Stephenson-Laws is an active member of the American Bar Association, Consumer Attorneys of Los Angeles, and the State Bar of California, and is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Courts for the Central and Eastern Districts of California and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Beyond her legal practice, Ms. Stephenson-Laws is the founder and executive director of Proactive Health Labs, a national nonprofit dedicated to evidence-based health literacy and helping people make informed decisions about their care. Through Proactive Health Labs, she has built educational resources and advocacy programs that translate complex clinical and scientific information into practical guidance for everyday readers.

She is also a published author whose work spans healthcare, wellness, and children’s literature. Her books include Minerals: The Forgotten Nutrient (co-authored), From Chains to Wings: A Poetry Revolution for Healing (Kirkus reviewed, with a companion workbook), and Secrets That Sparkle (and Secrets That Sting), a Kirkus “GET IT” children’s book for ages 5–8. Her forthcoming book, Your Labs Are Fine. You’re Not., will be published in June 2026 and examines the role of mineral deficiencies in commonly dismissed patient symptoms. The Feel-Pause-Act framework, which Ms. Stephenson-Laws developed and which runs through her body of work, offers readers a practical method for navigating health decisions with greater clarity and self-trust.

A certified holistic wellness coach with more than 15 years of practice, Ms. Stephenson-Laws integrates her legal, scientific, and wellness expertise into a single mission: improving health outcomes through education, advocacy, and evidence-based decision-making. Outside of her professional pursuits, she is an avid golfer and enjoys tennis and traveling. Through visionary leadership, sustained advocacy, and a deeply personal commitment to better healthcare, she has built a legacy that extends well beyond the courtroom — one defined by impact, innovation, and service.
