Community Hospitals - The Unsung Heroes of our Health Care System
A community hospital is synonymous with a general hospital. Its primary mission generally involves meeting the primary or essential health care needs of its community. Primary healthcare usually consists of services like family practice/internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, cardiology and sometimes services like orthopedics, urology, psychiatry and neurology.
Community hospitals may offer some specialty services on a limited basis or full-time, if they have the resources. Though not always recognized for their medical advances and highlighted in the media as other larger teaching hospitals, community hospitals are just as vital.
Their existence is the backbone of our healthcare system and their strategic locations offer quick access to care in times of emergency.
